4G Wi-Fi Router or Dongle Slow at Home? Will a Signal Booster Help?

SIGLIFT banner: 4G Wi-Fi router or dongle slow at home, will a signal booster help?

Key takeaways

  • Weak signal (around −105 dBm or worse) means slow, unstable internet for every device on its Wi-Fi.
  • A 4G router is a phone without a screen: it connects to the tower with a SIM, then shares that connection over Wi-Fi.
  • Router admin page: most 4G routers and MiFi devices have a web page (often printed on the label, like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) that shows RSRP, RSRQ and SINR.
  • Keep it away from metal, such as almirahs, grilles, steel doors and inverter batteries, and away from thick concrete pillars.

Millions of Indian homes, shops and site offices get their internet from a SIM: a 4G Wi-Fi router, a pocket MiFi or a USB dongle. It is quick to set up and works where fibre hasn't arrived. But when speeds crawl, video calls freeze and the router's signal light blinks orange, the cause is very often weak 4G signal reaching the router. Here is how to confirm it, what you can do for free, and when a signal booster is worth it.

Quick answer

  • A 4G router or dongle is only as fast as the 4G signal it receives. Weak signal (around −105 dBm or worse) means slow, unstable internet for every device on its Wi-Fi.
  • Try free fixes first: move the router to a window or higher floor, away from metal and concrete, and test different spots.
  • If the signal is good outside but weak where the router sits, a mobile signal booster brings strong 4G to the router and usually improves speed and stability.
  • Boosters help 4G (and 2G/3G) only. They won't boost 5G fixed-wireless connections.

Why is my 4G router slow?

A 4G router is a phone without a screen: it connects to the tower with a SIM, then shares that connection over Wi-Fi. Slowness comes from one of three places:

CauseSignsFix
Weak 4G signal at the router1–2 bars on the router, orange or red signal light, slow at all hoursMove the router, or add a signal booster
Tower congestionGood signal but slow mainly in the eveningOff-peak use, a different operator, or fibre
Wi-Fi problems inside the homeFast next to the router, slow in far roomsReposition the router, add a Wi-Fi extender or mesh

A quick test separates them: run a speed test with your laptop right next to the router, at mid-afternoon and again at about 9 pm. If it is slow next to the router at both times, the 4G signal is the likely culprit. If it is slow only at 9 pm, see our guide on weak signal vs network congestion.

How do I check my router's 4G signal?

  • Router admin page: most 4G routers and MiFi devices have a web page (often printed on the label, like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) that shows RSRP, RSRQ and SINR. Our explainer on RSRP, RSRQ and SINR tells you what the values mean.
  • Signal lights or bars on the device: a rough guide only.
  • Put the SIM in a phone at the router's location and check the dBm reading with our signal strength checker.

As a rough guide for 4G routers: RSRP of −90 dBm or better gives good speeds; −100 to −110 dBm gives slow, patchy internet; worse than −110 dBm means frequent disconnections.

Free fixes to try first

  1. Move the router to a window facing the tower. Try each side of the house.
  2. Go higher. An upper floor or the top of a cupboard often adds a bar or two.
  3. Keep it away from metal, such as almirahs, grilles, steel doors and inverter batteries, and away from thick concrete pillars.
  4. Restart the router occasionally so it reconnects to the best available cell.
  5. Try another operator's SIM in the same spot. Coverage varies a lot street by street.

The catch: the best signal spot may be a window in the guest room, not where you need the router. That is where a booster comes in.

When a signal booster is the right fix

A booster helps when the 4G signal is decent outside but weak where the router has to sit. Its outdoor antenna on the roof or balcony picks up the stronger signal, the booster amplifies it, and an indoor antenna near the router delivers it. The router sees a strong, clean signal, which usually means faster speeds, more stable connections and fewer drop-outs. In technical terms, better SINR lets the router use more efficient data rates.

And because a booster covers the whole space, every phone in the house gets better calls and data too. A router-only fix can't do that.

Matching the booster to your router

  • Check the operator and band your router uses. A Jio router typically relies on 850, 1800 and 2300 MHz; Airtel on 900, 1800, 2100 and 2300 MHz. See how to find your 4G band.
  • Jio and Airtel 4G: a kit covering 850/1800/2300 MHz such as the SIGLIFT SL-8518-23B suits data-heavy use, because 2300 MHz carries a lot of 4G capacity.
  • Mixed operators at home: a multi-operator kit covers routers and phones on different networks; compare models on our 4G signal booster page.

What about routers with external antenna ports?

Some 4G routers have small connectors for external antennas. Fitting an antenna directly can help that one router. A booster, though, improves signal for the router and every phone in the house at once, and you don't need a router with antenna ports. Our article on whether a network antenna alone works explains the difference between passive antennas and an amplified system.

What a booster can't do

  • It can't boost 5G. SIGLIFT boosters amplify 2G/3G/4G. If you use a 5G fixed-wireless service, the booster won't speed up its 5G link (though phones in the house still benefit on 4G).
  • It can't fix tower congestion. If the tower is overloaded at peak hours, you will still see evening slowdowns.
  • It can't exceed your plan's limits. Data caps and post-FUP speed limits still apply.

Frequently asked questions

Will a signal booster increase my 4G router speed?

If the router is on weak signal, yes: stronger, cleaner signal lets it use faster data rates and stay connected. If the router already has good signal and is slow only at busy hours, the cause is congestion, and a booster won't change much.

Where should I place my 4G router for best signal?

Near a window on the side of the house facing the tower, as high as practical, away from metal furniture and grilles. Test a few spots with the router's admin page or a phone signal reading.

Does a booster work with a JioFi or other MiFi device?

Yes. A MiFi or dongle is just another 4G device. If the booster covers its operator's bands, it gets the same stronger signal as phones do.

Can one booster help both my router and my family's phones?

Yes, that is a big advantage. The booster improves 4G for everything in its coverage area: routers, dongles and phones, on every operator the kit supports.
